Sport is a high priority at our school. The curriculum is well planned and delivered by experienced and well-qualified teaching staff. We are very fortunate to have a P.E specialist (and qualified swimming coach) on our staff, which enables us to deliver challenging and competitive sporting experiences.
We have a large sports field located just 60m from the school, to which we have free access throughout the week, enabling sport to be delivered flexibly. This ensures that children are able to access sport in the open air all year round, encouraging resilience and variety (see our P.E curriculum).
KS2 children also use the sports field for their lunchtime playtime, playing a range of sports and games daily. Outdoor access is important to us all and we dress appropriately, whatever the weather.
We have excellent partnerships with local sporting bodies to enable our children to participate in a wide variety of Sports. Our aim is to enable each child to find a physical activity that they really enjoy. They become motivated to continue sport at Secondary School and on into adult life.
Since September 2018, we have been working closely with Discovery Sports coaches who teach from Foundation Stage to KS2 children at Bicker every week. Their holistic program enables children to learn the rules of the major sports as well as practising relevant skills through fun activities. In addition to providing our After School Sports club from September 2019, which includes sport at the Village Hall during the winter months (January to March), our Tuesday afternoon sport during those months will also be taking place in the Village Hall.
We also work with Discovery Sports - - to deliver a number of sporting opportunities, such as Futsal, when we visit Nocton Leisure Centre in the Spring Term.
Our previous visits to Nocton during January/February, have enabled all of our children, from 5 - 11years, to access a challenging swimming programme, delivered by our two well-qualified swimming coaches.
We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the experienced athletics coaches at Boston and District Athletics Club. We visit the B-Hive in the Autumn Term each year to benefit from their excellent indoor athletics training. Many of our children choose to continue their training on a Friday evening and a number have competed in the club's winter Cross Country season, achieving excellent results (see our Facebook page for recent events).
Children enjoy competitive Sport throughout the year, earning team points for their Houses. Sports day in the summer is a chance for every child to compete in races whilst being cheered on by parents and friends.
We continue to place a high priority on sport and physical activity for children, both to promote their physical health and their mental well-being.
From September, Discovery Sport will be continuing to provide our Tuesday afternoon sports coaching. They will be providing an holistic approach to sport, which fits in more closely with our school ethos. We are also looking forward to indoor gymnastic tuition as well as dance and yoga, this year - areas that the children tell us they would like to learn more about.
We will be continuing to work with Boston and District Athletic Club to improve our athletic skills and will be taking part in their winter Cross Country events this year. Our children always achieve excellent results and impress with their determination and commitment.
We are also excited about our visits to Nocton Leisure Centre again in the Spring Term. the children all agree that their swimming skills have improved greatly, as has their knowledge of Sports Science.
Sporting Success Begins at Bicker Prep.
We enjoy encouraging our pupils to take up new sports and to pursue these both in and out of school. One of our past pupils has recently achieved the astonishing feat of becoming Britain's youngest-ever Master Bowman.
Her coach said 'After first meeting the young lady at Bicker Preparatory School's summer fete, in May 2014, I could see that she took to shooting so easily and thrived on the training schedule I gave her. The young lady said 'Because I listened to what my coach said and didn't give up, my mum and dad got me some archery lessons for my eighth birthday when I was still a pupil at Bicker Preparatory School.'
Several of our children are competing at County level in a variety of sports. Two of our Year 6 girls have been taking part in County Level tennis this year.
We encourage all our pupils to build on their strengths and to try new skills. We collaborate with parents to facilitate additional training within the school week, if required. Who knows where it may lead?
We have been working with Mr Dan Taylor of Discovery Sport for some time now, in order to deliver a number of sporting opportunities. Children have enjoyed his team skills sessions at the Village Hall as well as Futsal, athletics and multi-sports at Nocton.
As well as weekly class music lessons with our music specialist, Mrs Biggs, children can also learn a range of other instruments, including the keyboard, piano, violin, guitar and trumpet.
All of our music tutors are highly experienced musicians and teachers, who are skilled at harnessing children's interests and enthusiasms. Children may work individually, or occasionally in pairs, to develop their skills and talents.
Whether they have music lessons in school, or at home, children are invited to take part in our regular school 'concerts'. They enjoy performing to their friends, where they receive lots of encouragement and support. We have been delighted that several of our children have performed in church services and assemblies and parents have commented on the pleasure of hearing them play.
Many of our budding musicians have achieved excellent grades in their music exams and go on to join orchestras when they reach secondary school.
Our music tutors are happy to take additional students when spaces become available.
Please ask at school if you are interested.
We continue to offer tuition on a number of musical instruments.
We are pleased to welcome Mr Christopher Collins into our school to teach piano and keyboard skills on a Monday morning.
Mr Clarke is able to provide instruments for a limited number of children to try the violin and will continue with violin tuition on a Monday afternoon.
Please ask at school for further details. We also have trumpets available if anyone would like to have some 'taster' lessons with Mr Johnston. Mr Johnston also teaches guitar, ukelele and the flute on a Wednesday afternoon.
Due to secondary transition, from September 2019 there will be a few spaces available for individual music lessons. Please ask in school for details.
